Intel Working On A Smartphone; To Be Priced At Rs 7,000

The company is reportedly looking to tie-up with handset manufacturers for the device, which will run on Intel's chips.

US-based chipmaker Intel has decided to develop smartphones with its chips, priced at Rs 7,000 onwards. While the company is already visible with its processors in Lava devices, they are still looking for more alternative and brands like Micromax, Karbonn are vying for the opportunity, which could be an opening for the handset providers to evolve in the country.
The touch screen-based smartphones, based on Google's Android operating system, would be available in the market by the middle of 2013, said Debjani Ghosh, managing director – Sales and Marketing, Intel South Asia on the sidelines of INFOCOM 2012.

In India at present, Intel in partnership with Lava offers 'Lava Xolo', which features Intel's mobile chip. "The first handset with Lava that we launched was a premium one. We learnt that it was important to have a portfolio and offer choice to the user. We will not have entry-level handsets but our smartphone range will be priced upwards of Rs 7,000," she said.
Ghosh, however, did not divulge whether the partnerships would be with homegrown or international equipment makers.
