Linux Engineer For HERE Maps, Not Android Phone: Nokia

We earlier reported about a job posting by Nokia for a Linux engineer fueling speculations that the company is most likely looking the Android way. The job posting sought an employee wanting to work in a 'start-up environment' with 'exciting new products' and future mobile phone technology. But the news has been rebuked by the source itself. The company does not have any plans to work on an Android phone. This news was especially controversial as Nokia is reportedly focusing on Windows Phone platform.

Putting the speculations to rest, Nokia’s head of media relations, Doug Dawson clarified their stand on Twitter. He said, “Our recently posted job is linked to our HERE Maps support for other platforms,” Dawson says, “including iOS and Android.” The Linux engineer is supposed to help deliver some of Nokia’s more recent services onto rival platforms.
For the uninitiated, HERE maps is Nokia’s bet on acquiring the maps market share. The navigation and route-planning service built using the NAVTEQ technology it acquired some time ago. That NAVTEQ cleverness already powers Nokia Maps on Windows Phone, but with the debut of HERE Maps was expanded to tackle other platforms, reports Slashdot.
