Saturday, December 01, 2012:
Previously, we pointed out that Dell's XPS 13 ultrabook running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS aka Precise Pangolin was priced higher than the Windows 8 edition. The XPS 13 is already available with Windows 8 starting at $999. Surprisingly, the Ubuntu version is priced as high as $1549 despite Ubuntu being a free operating system, while Windows 8 is totally proprietary. Dell has responded to the feedback and has dropped the price of XPS 13 Ubuntu edition by $100.
According to an official blog posting from Dell, “Some customers pointed out that the Ubuntu-based XPS 13 was priced higher than the comparable Windows 8 offering on other Dell.com online stores. It was not our intention to price the XPS 13 developer edition higher. To rectify this, we have adjusted the price down to $1,449.”

Based on an Intel Core i7 CPU, the XPS 13 Ubuntu edition has 8GB of RAM along with 256GB of hard drive storage space and sports a 33.7-cm (13.3-inch) screen. The Windows version of the XPS 13 is available on either Intel Core i5 2467M or i7 2637M processors along with 4 GB of RAM. This might be a possible reason for the high price but then why did Dell bother to include Intel Core i7 CPU and 8GB RAM when Ubuntu 12.04 can work fine with a Intel Core i3 CPU and just 2GB of RAM.
Even if Dell made the Ubuntu version with the similar Windows 8 laptop hardware specification, then also the price would be have lower. The question is why did Dell build a high priced Ubuntu version unnecessarily? Dell had already been criticised enough for not marketing its Ubuntu laptops enough. This is another factor that shows how the company is dealing with open source technology. The Ubuntu edition of XPS 13 ultrabook could have easily priced at par with the Windows 8 edition at least, if not lower. Anyways, all's well that ends well!

Well because Dell knows an Ubuntu release would allow for a more stable computer. Why not profit a bit off it - isnt that the American way I would simply just buy the win8 pc and format over the top of it anyway Just sayin.
