Tuesday, November 27, 2012:
IBM Simon, world's first handheld touch based mobile has turned 20 on 23 November 2012. International Business Machines Inc (IBM) introduced a prototype device, named as Angler on that date at the COMDEX computer and technology trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The era of smartphone started from there and today we are carrying a mini computing device on our palm, which is capable of doing much more than just a communicator. Initially, BellSouth Cellular sold IBM Simon at $899 with a two-year service contract. The unlocked version was priced at $1099. BellSouth Cellular managed to sell around 50,000 units during the first six months in the market.

What's interesting is that IBM created a smartphone but the term 'smartphone' came into existence in 1997. IBM's Simon personal communicator was a large device with a small processor! The processor was clocked at just 16 MHz and featured a 11.4-cm (4.5-inch) black and white 160×293 LCD display along with stylus support for touch input and just 1 MB of RAM and a maximum of 1.8 MB memory card supports. The device was powered by a nickel-cadmium battery.
The Simon ran on Datalight ROM-DOS file system along with file compression from Stacker. The device was powered by a unique touch-screen user interface, which was especially built for Simon and could be upgraded to run third party applications either by inserting a PCMCIA card or by downloading an application to the phone's internal memory.
