Is It Too Late For GNOME To Go Back To Version 2.x?

GNOME users made it pretty clear that if the developers don't make things simple and similar to GNOME 2.x style desktop, they will never turn to GNOME ever again.

Monday, November 26, 2012:
GNOME's empire in Linux desktop started to crumble the day when its developers came up with the all new desktop interface, GNOME 3 against the wishes of users. Well, we don't know what made the guys at GNOME take pride in the new interface but they have certainly realised their mistake and might be regretting the move. According to GNOME developer Matthias Clasen official posting, "We certainly hope that many users will find the new (GNOME 3.x) ways comfortable and refreshing after a short learning phase, we should not fault people who prefer the old way. After all, these features were a selling point of GNOME 2 for ten years!"

From the aggressive move to version 3 of GNOME, it seemed the previous GNOME users were abandoned mid way. But, as life continues, people have found their alternatives to GNOME 3. Canonical, maker of Ubuntu Linux distribution, came up with its Unity shell, basically a GNOME 3.x fork. Mint with Cinnamon along with Arch with MATE tweaked their own GNOME 2.x interface. On the other hand, Linux big boss, Linus Torvalds, opted to go with XFCE and other older alternatives.
GNOME users made it pretty clear that if the developers doesn't make things simple and similar to GNOME 2.x style desktop, they will never turn to GNOME ever again. The entire GNOME 3 episode helped other desktops as it gained fans at GNOME's expense, but now the developers have realised that something needs to be done to bring back the good old fans. But is it too late? Well, time would decide.
“Thankfully, we have a pretty awesome extension mechanism in gnome-shell (extensions.gnome.org), and there are a ton of extensions out there which allow users to tweak gnome-shell in all kinds of ways. This also includes extensions which bring back many of the aforementioned 'classic' UX elements. As part of the planning for the DropOrFixFallbackMode feature, we've decided that we will compile a list of supported gnome-shell extensions. This will be a small list, focused on just bringing back some central 'classic' UX elements: classic alt tab, task bar, min/max buttons, main menu,” added Clasen in a posting.
However, no final decision has been made on how to let users turn on this 'classic mode' which Clasen describes as "A switch in gnome-tweak-tool or something else." To read the entire posting click here.
