Solar Energy To Run Shimla Soon!

Efforts are in place to convert the city into a major solar-power hub.

Shimla has always been primarily relying on hydro-energy to meet its power requirement. But moving on, the city has inclined towards solar energy to meet the ever increasing demand for electricity in the city. The Shimla Municipal Corporation has decided to give final touches to a proposed ‘solar city plan’ in an effort to realise the growing need for power.
The project is an initiative of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and aimed at developing solar cities to ensure supply of renewable energy. Shimla has been chosen on a pilot basis.

Tikender Panwa, deputy mayor said, “ The project was initially proposed for the south-facing geographical areas including Nabha,Totu, Chotta Shimla, Fagli, Mall Road, Lower Bazaar, New Shimla, Kasumpti, Malyana Vikas Nagar and some areas of Sanjauli. But ,there is a plan to include the entire town.”
Panwar said a final decision on the plan will be taken after MC authorities, the project’s nodal agency HIMURJA and the Centre deliberate the matter in New Delhi on 22 November. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has already approved a master plan of Rs 50 million under which Shimla will be developed as a a solar city.
As part of the master plan, the MC in collaboration with the Town and Country Planning Department would install solar hot water systems in all hotels, nursing homes, school and hostels.
