It is the time for Android operating system to rule leaving iOS behind. Probably it is Apple's insecurity of losing the market share to Android that is forcing the company to make such frequent launches. But, the sheer fact that Android is open source and is a users' delight, Google's operating system continues to occupy the largest share in the mobile devices space. Android is eating up Apple's lunch by providing scope for innovation at affordable price, say the ananlysts.
According to a report from IDC, Android operating system has powered around three out of four smartphones in the recently ended quarter and dominated the market worldwide. Ramon Llamas, mobile phones research manager at IDC, “Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008. In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition.”

Despite launching three iPads in a year, Apple faced a downfall in the tablets market as well. Its share fell to around 50 per cent from 65 per cent in the second quarter and Android devices gain ground, revealed IDC figures.
NPD Group analyst Stephen Baker, said, "Having a lot of people building a lot of things covering a lot of price points with multiple brands in multiple places makes a big difference. Variety is strength when it comes to moving units."
The IDC figures show that Android smartphones shipments reached to the 136 million mark. Samsung Galaxy SIII emerged as a clear winner over iPhone 4S in the third quarter and became the first ever world's best-selling phone from Samsung, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
Ken Dulaney, vice president of mobile computing, Gartner, said, “The pace of innovation in Android is faster than Apple. They are just trying harder; Apple is way behind in that area."
Android is enjoying the benefits of being an open source operating systems, which allows the users to modify it as they want. Where as, Apple is tightly controlled from the software to the hardware and even the online shop for music, books, games or other content.
Dulaney appreciated Android by saying, “What you get with Android is this incredible feedback loop with developers, equipment makers, customers, and designers. At Apple, as long as they have a great vision internally it is fine but they don't have the feedback Android does."
The main strength of Android is the different devices offered with the platform vying for consumers' cash. This has helped the platform gain strength in the market, analysts noted. Not only do the consumers get a choice of devices, but with the presence of majority of players, the devices are available at competitive prices.
