Wednesday, October 31, 2012:
The lighting segment in India is estimated to be around Rs 90 billion, out of which, Philips enjoys 30 per cent share. But when we talk about the LED lighting segment in particular, there are not too many figures to suggest the market size of the segment in India, which clearly states the need for drastic efforts to be put in, to facilitate the growth of the LED segment. Lighting gets major concentration in India during the festive period (i.e. August to December) and this does not bode well for the future.
Many lighting majors like Philips, Surya, GE, Bajaj Electricals to name a few, have been stressing the need of government's involvement in the segment, to aid hassle-free operations and there are signs that the government is ready to put its step forward, which is giving these brands a reason to believe that growth is near around the corner.

We spoke to Sumit Joshi, senior director, Marketing, Philips Lighting India, about the company's strategy to maintain its lead position in the segment in India, to which he said, "Philips has always seen the Indian market as a crucial part of its overall global business. The lighting division has maintained its status-quo, primarily depending upon the basics of offering energy efficient lighting products to the consumer in India, at a price which is affordable."
With the Diwali season cllosing upon us, we asked Joshi whether Philips has lined up any exciting products for this year, to which he replied, "Philips has launched its decorative lighting products, which run on battery as well as electricity."
