Monday, October 08, 2012 TomTom has released a new navigation app for Android devices. One of the main features of the app is that it is an offline navigation app, which helps keep data costs in control. With this, users no more have to connect to the Internet to use the navigation functionality efficiently.

You can simply download the offline map files through Wi-Fi.

All the different versions of the Navigation service come at a hefty price tag, ranging between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000, depending on the area you choose to download the maps for.

Some of the features of TomTom’s navigation service are 2D/ 3D driving view, clear voice instructions, fast route recalculation, multi-stop routes, eco routes, navigate to contacts, search TomTom places and POIs, automatic music fading, automatic day and night mode, car symbols, and map colours. One of the basic requirements for downloading the app is at least 320 MB of free space on the phone.

The size of the maps to be downloaded for offline use is 4 GB.

TomTom is looking to compete with Google’s own Navigation service on the Android, which was launched in India last month.

Google’s search tools go a distance in assisting the user, where words misspelled are corrected and clarified without requiring the user to enter an exact address, and the optimal route from origin to destination is quickly calculated.

You can download TomTom’s navigation app from the Google Play store.
