Much like the all smoke and no fire situation, there are tablet makers who have made tall claims without appropriate stock in hand and there are those who have fulfilled their promises as far as the delivery and availability is concerned. With the Me Tab U1 and the Me Tab X1 in its kitty, HCL Infosystems has some robust plans to make the best use of the boiling tablet market in the country.
At the Consumer Computing 2012 event, the company shared and discussed about the recent consumer trends in the market. Speaking to EFYTimes, Princy Bhatnagar, VP and head, consumer computing, HCL Infosystems said, “The customer has some clear expectations out of the computing product he is looking for. People are interested in buying computing devices that address the verticals of entertainment, connectivity, fun apps, mobility, style quotient, value for money.”

He further said that the youth is driving the market in terms of computing. Along with discussing key consumer trends in the market, the company launched the all new Beanstalk range of AIO PC and Smart Series 1044 laptop. The soon to be launched HCL Ultrabook was also unveiled by the company at the event.
Besides other latest products, the company also put the ME series of tablets on display. Keeping in mind the recent HCL Me U1 tablet, EFYTimes spoke to Gautam Advani, EVP, Mobility, HCL Infosystems, about the company's tablet PC plans ahead. “The 2010-11 time period marked the year of expensive tablets. But thanks to the Aakash tablet, government as a whole, lot of information pertaining to tablets has been disseminated in the market. People now have definite information about what they want out of their tablet devices,” said Gautam while giving information about the current tablet market in India.
He further mentioned that tablet as devices are meant for the young generation. It seems that the company is pretty confident on betting on the young population of the country.
The company had launched the Me Tab X1 in Oct 2011 at a Rs 10,990 price point. The company believes its 24x7 customer support across 4,000 towns in the nation has enabled huge growth for their tablets. “According to our estimates, by Q1 2012, HCL's tablets had occupied a 15 per cent market share in the country. With the Android ICS running Me Tab U1 in the market, by May 2012, our market share increased to 18 per cent.”
But such results do not hold the company's appetite for growth in the market. “We are planning a tablet called Y2 for August launch. The tablet will carry a 17.74-cm (7-inch) screen, run on Android ICS and support voice calling via a 3G SIM card.”
We did not get any information on the tablet's pricing but it is expected that the tablet will be priced around the sub-10K category and certainly lower than the Me U1 tablet.
