Thursday, May 10, 2012 Necessity is the mother of invention and when it comes to the technology world, necessity leads to solutions in open source. ISPunity is one such open source application, which happened exactly because of that!

ISPunity is an open source application that integrates multiple Internet connections for load balancing and failover. Most companies keep more than one Internet connections - for safe guarding against down-time or for increasing the bandwidth. However, as of today, only one of these connections can be used at one time. But if you wish to use all these Internet connections simultaneously, ISPunity is the choice. It 'magically' balances the Internet load over these different connections. This also means that the more connections we use, the faster and better connectivity we get! The icing on the cake is that the Internet connection will automatically failover to another one in case any of the lines go down!

ISPunity, open source application for uniting ISPs, managing multiple internet connections, Open source, open source technology

Arun Tomar, chief executive officer, Solution Enterprises, an IT infrastructure management with core expertise on Linux and Solaris platform, said, "We can achieve maximum utilisation of bandwidth from the Internet resources, in turn getting full value for money. There is no limitation in terms of number of Internet connections or even the type of connections (Ethernet, usb data card, Wi-Fi, lease line, 3G mobile phones or dongles etc). ISPunity works on any linux distribution and is dependent on Ruby. It is easy to install, use and manage."

Suppose you have a broadband connection at home and also a USB 3G dongle to be connected when you're on the move. You can combine the bandwidth of both using ISPunity and get faster download speeds and no downtime.

For companies who depend on multiple Internet connections, the appliances they ideally need are very expensive. On the other hand, ISPunity is not only free but gives more flexibility with a number of Internet connections. Using ISPunity, the network administrator has absolute control over the network and its services like the Proxy, Firewall, DHCP, DNS, VPN, QoS, Bandwidth monitor etc. There is no learning curve, no special hardware requirement and no fancy installation either! The system admins at the big enterprises, can install ISPunity on whichever Linux distro that they are most comfortable with.

And the innovation began like this...

Talking about the initiation of the project, Tomar said, "Most of our clients were forced to have multiple internet connections because broadband Internet providers are not very reliable and a lease line could be expensive as bandwidth increases. They were paying for all the internet connections but were able to use only one internet connection at a time. 'Can't we use all the internet connections simultaneously?' was a common query put in front of us. We decided to tackle this problem but realized this would be challenging because normally you can't have more than one gateway on the machine. This is how ISPunity was born. We realised that this was a common problem and everyone would benefit from this. So, we decided to launch it as an opensource project and presented the project at RubyConf India 2012."

Tomar's team looked at Linux networking internals and put together a lot of existing pieces to come up with ISPunity. He recalls, "It's funny now that we look back after 2 years of research, that the solution existed in bits and pieces in Linux. The tricky part was putting it together and building a solution around it! After that was just half the battle one - We needed to make it simple and usable, have Dead Gateway Detection, Automatic Failover and QoS."

ISPunity has seen about 355 downloads since its launch last week. The team has also received a lot of requests from users.

Talking about the applicability of the project, Tomar said, "This project can be used at home, in small offices, cyber cafes, colleges and even big companies! All linux distributions can bundle ISPunity. ISPunity will work on any Linux kernel 2.0 and above and uses advanced linux routing policies. As a programming language we chose Ruby (A dynamic, open source programming language with focus on simplicity and productivity) and it's ecosystem (rubygems, community, ruby on rails etc.). ISPunity is currently released as a Ruby gem."

The team is working for further development of the project on the basis of feedbacks and suggestions they have got from the users.

The team is planning to release an updated version of ISPunity soon. Tomar said, "We are releasing a new/updated version every other week. ISPunity is currently a command line application. The idea is that even a layman should be able to use it out of box - simple, straight forward instructions. For this, we want to move to where this can be added to the Linux distros. So make it easy for others is our mantra - Till it's not included in the Linux distribution, people should be able to just copy paste a command from the website and everything will be installed and ready to use."

He further added, "We are also currently building a Web service to create the configuration file needed for the application. We shall be extending it further to manage ISPunity via the Internet. We plan on providing API access so that other applications can integrate with it- (eg: Linux package manager could download packages simultaneously from different net connections if available). For the QoS, we do plan to implement dynamic traffic shaping and provide dashboard views for management too!"

So let the ISPs unite through ISPunity and get the most of your Internet connections!
