A video released on YouTube showed the Left 4 Dead game being run from an Ubuntu 11.10 workstation. This also indicates that Valve is making good progress with its intentions to give Linux a dedicated gaming support.
Till now, the only reason users preferred Windows over Linux was that the open source OS lacked support for many games. Now, Gabe Newell and Valve's Steam might change this equation to help Linus Torvalds' Linux to face big corporations like Microsoft and Apple head on.
A dedicated team of Linux developers are working to port the Steam client and the Source game engine to run primarily on Linux. Finally, the good news of a dedicated gaming support named Steam for Linux will be a reality within a couple of months.
Previously, guys at Phoronix found a photograph of Steam running on Linux, with the game Left 4 Dead running on Ubuntu 11.10 along with AMD Catalysts drivers. Many were skeptical about the leaked photograph, but now, it has been confirmed that the photograph was original after they posted a video of the same scenario in which the photograph was taken.
