Thursday, February 23, 2012:
The never-ending Aakash saga continues! Amid a host of announcements in recent times and follow-up confusions, here comes some fresh new insights about the world's cheapest tablet - both for the first version of Aakash and the upcoming Aakash 2 tablet.
As noted earlier, Aakash part 1 was positioned at $35 price point and similar range was in offing for the improved Aakash 2 version. Now, it's being reported that the ministry had decided to revise the upper ceiling to $50 for the new version Aakash 2.

Other than the revised price tag, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has recently hinted that the new Aakash 2 tablet will come with better specifications as compared to its predecessor, which sports resistive touchsreen. The second version is now supposed to carry a 'capacitive' touchscreen display and faster processor along with minor tweaks, reports Indian Express.
"It has been decided that we can go up to $50 for Aakash 2, which will come with a capacitive screen besides a faster processor and other features. However, under no circumstances will we go beyond $50," said a highly placed official.
In other developments, HRD is planning to hand over the the Aakash project largely to the Department of Information Technology and they will invite bids for 5 million tablets in April. With an aim to make Aakash 'Made in India', Govt further plans to involve ITI, C-DAC and BEL in the distribution of the tablet.
"IT and this committee will now on largely handhold Aakash 2 tablet. After the IIT-Jodhpur experience, it is amply clear that IITs are incapable of handling a project like this and specially the distribution part," sources said.
Meanwhile, DataWind, which has yet to resolve its payment issues regarding first Aakash tender, is eager to remain on board with regard to Aakash 2 production as the company has shown interest by saying that they 'can' provide Aakash tablet with upgraded specs at $35.
