Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest Android software that released last October is widely regarded as Google's best software till date. But, the main problem with Android updates is that it makes the wait excruciatingly long.
Both device manufacturers and carriers have to tediously wait to push out the update to smartphones that are already in the market. For instance, take an HTC phone sold by Telstra. HTC manufactures the phone, but the software is provided by Google and the phone runs on the Telstra network. Hence, any software update needs to be first tested by HTC in order to ensure compatibility with its hardware. HTC then releases the update to the carriers (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) where each will check and test the software to ensure it works well. After it is approved by all, the update is then released to the end customer.

The whole update process is long and tiring. This is because multiple parties are involved along with too many steps before its official release. And some older Android phones may not even receive the update as the manufacturers update each model on a case by case basis. A phone receives the latest update depending on its technical capabilities and its stage in the product life cycle.
However, Apple faces no such issues with its iPhone. This is because it produces both the hardware and the software for the iPhone. Also, all software versions are the same regardless of carrier. And, on Android phones, carriers often slightly alter the software to include specific apps or settings. For instance, a Telstra Android phone will usually come pre-loaded with apps to access the telco's services like Mobile Foxtel. But, Apple doesn't allow this software tweaking on the iPhone, so it enables to push out updates simultaneously, regardless of carrier.
