An Open Letter To Aakash Makers!

A collective voice of disgruntled Aakash fans who have been waiting for what seems like eternity to know about their Aakash tablet's pre-order status and its final arrival.

Friday, February 10, 2012 To Whom It May Concern:

Dear Mr Kapil Sibal, Mr Tuli, Datawind and Aakash Suppliers,

What promised literally a dream come true for middle class Indians and the young generation, the Aakash tablet has gradually become a distorted reality. The hype and hoopla surrounding the cheapest tablet device had faded out. For now, frustration, online cry and unanswered queries hang in limbo.

The world's cheapest tablet Aakash aka UbiSlate 7 was launched earlier and the pre-booking of its advanced version Aakash 2 or UbiSlate 7+ is going on since late last year. But there are hoardes of dissatisfied souls who have pre-booked their Aakash tablet and know 'NOTHING' about the status of this device.

Aakash, Aakash tablet, Aakash status, Pre-booked Aakash, Aakash delivery, Aakash in stores, Aakash availability, Aakash specs, Aakash price, Aakash for states, Aakash for students, Aakash for colleges, Aakash for general people, Free Aakash, Aakash email reply, Aakash pre-order status, Aakash 2, Aakash 2 tablet, Ubislate, Ubislate 7, Ubislate 7+, Datawind, Government of India, Kapil Sibal, Suneet Singh Tuli

A buyer interested in Aakash doesn't know when and where to get his device? College students in different cities and states do not know how to get this device. In fact, no one knows whom to contact for queries regarding this device. Surprisingly, Mr Sibal recently stated that Aakash in tandem with India's another dream project Aadhar can be used to fight corruption!

Imagine this, we covered a story last month: "Know Your Aakash 2 Booking Status Via E-mail!" Now, there are scores of visitors flocking this page to inquire about the delivery status of their pre-booked Aakash device.

Tuli posted earlier: "With tens of thousands of calls daily to our call centre, we are unable to adequately respond to all the queries we are receiving. As we work with extreme urgency to build-up our response capacity, if you have difficulty in getting through to our toll-free number, please fill-in the query forms on this website or e-mail us at supportin@datawind.com, and we will revert back to you at the earliest."

But for the time being, it seems like a hogwash as the readers are not getting answers to their Aakash tablet's query on the above-mentioned DataWind e-mail.

It's strange that a product conceived at Indian labs--which is still attracting millions--despite its shortcomings, is getting unattended to date. There is no centralised mechanism to answer scores of queries and to satisfy the curiosity of young students.

From its final specifications to the final pricing (for a general buyer, college-goer), everything still seem hazy. Students from different states want to know when the tablet will arrive in their city, in their college or in the market. In fact the excitement surrounding this device can be measured online as for any tablet-related posting on Facebook, the young crowd is asking questions pertaining to Aakash and Aakash only.

Although if the state of Aakash part 1 is confusing, equally dubious is the status of its next version aka Aakash 2 or UbiSlate 7+. Check out some of the reader queries posted on Know Your Aakash 2 Booking Status Via E-mail! story:

Girish (27 days ago): There is no response on my inquiry on delivery status even on email. Not sure what's happening.

Sanjeev Shukla (15 days ago): What is the status of delivery of my pre-booked Ubislate 7? My booking ID no. is PM8681EB8373.

Siba Prasad Rautray (9 days ago): My booking ID. FOR UBISLATE 7 is PZ113176 DT. 06.Dec. 2011. When is the expected date of delivery?

Khan (13 days ago): What is the status of delivery of my pre-booked Ubislate 7? Booking ID is PME8056.

Prashant Doshi (12 days ago): I got response of my mail but to after 1 month.

Nishant (8 days ago): My booking id is PM7B4C. When I will get its delivery?

Kamal (3 days ago): I booked the Aakash PC new version a month back. But unfortunately I did not check the Booking ID number. So how i can get mail again?

Muthineni Haniminesh (20 hr 23 min ago): I pre-orderd Aakash UBISLATE. REF ID PME6A688AE9. What about my status? Give me reply at my mail id.

Waseem (14 days ago): Dear Sir. I have booked my Aakash tablet Ubislate 7 on December 17th 2011. As u promised that your delivery period is for 7 working days so still i m waiting for my booking id is PME34FC and your call centre number is not working. Please give me satisfactory answer at waseembari.blr@gmail.com or cell No. 9686326406. Else I'll take action under consumer forum also.

Aditya (8 days ago): What is the status of my pre-booked Ubislate-7? Booking id is PM5C3B4.

Gopala Krishna Mukkamala (10 days ago): What is the status of tablet delivery? My booking ID No. is PMC8C5F. I booked this tablet around 15th december2011. When can I receive that tablet?

Ataul Haque (3 days ago): My booking status and expected date of delievery? My booking id is PMC8B7F.

Sapna (1 day ago): Kindly let me know my booking status. My booking id is PMCCCEB.

This is not the end of the queries. There will be many more posted online as long as there is no official reply to those who have pre-booked their device. In fact, all those who pre-booked Aakash 2 got the confirmation mail as below:

"Someone from our sales team would get in touch with you and provide you with the payment and delivery options. The commercial version of the UbiSlate would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch, we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible."

The early weeks of December had passed way back. We have entered in the month of February, still there's no sign of Aakash on the horizon. Although DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli may be confident of getting paid for their first Aakash tender to IIT-Rajasthan as he said: "This is not something I lose sleep over," there are thousands who might be losing theirs in anticipation of Aakash or at least about its status.

Somebody please answer.

Yours sincerely,

Aakash fans

[P.S.: By the way, what's the status of my pre-booked Aakash? My Booking ID is: PZ1604656.]
