Thursday, February 09, 2012:
Had the Government of India followed the recommendations of IIT Rajasthan, the upgraded version of Aakash, Aakash 2, would have been priced at $100.
Aakash seems to be a never-ending controversy in India. IIT Rajasthan is out of the scene now but looking back at the recent incidents, one cannot deny the fact that institute played a major role in upgradation of Aakash. Had it not been for IIT Rajasthan voicing its concern, Aakash with its ‘poor specifications’ would have become the destiny of Indian children. IIT Rajasthan recommended upgradation of Aakash and suggested that it should be made water and shock proof along with a fast processor and better battery. But if those specifications are taken care of, the sheer purpose of producing a low cost computing device is lost because the device will cost $100 with such specifications.

The device was launched by Ministry of Human Resource Development in October last year, where a deal was struck with Montreal based company to supply the Government with 100,000 tablets at $50.
Now the Government will float another tender for procuring further units of upgraded Aakash, where both public and private sector technology companies are willing to participate.
It is worth mentioning here that IIT Rajasthan came up with such ‘military’ specifications after the device failed to meet expectations of 600 IIT students. IIT Rajasthan wanted the device to run at a temperature from 20 degree and up to 50 degree Celsius, withstand steep and sudden fall and be waterproof. They wanted a 1.2 Ghz microprocessor as against 366 mega hertz (Mhz) in Aakash and RAM of 700 megabytes, double of the original. The battery upgradation they decided was specified to run up to eight hours. Manufacturing of such a tablet device can raise the cost of the device to over $100, said a Government official.
