Wednesday, February 08, 2012:
Soon after the Government of India issued an expression of interest (EoI) for Aakash II tablets, IT company HCL has expressed interest in bidding for the new version of the world's cheapest tablet Aakash.
A senior official from HCL Info said at the ISA Vision Summit 2012, Bengaluru, that the firm may offer its expertise in manufacturing Aakash II as the demand for the tablet has reached the million mark, states a Daily Bhaskar report.

At the same event, Kapil Sibal, union minister for HRD, communications and IT, had earlier said that the Government will soon make Aakash tablets available for free to all university and college students. Sibal had earlier said that Aakash II, the successor to the Aakash tablet, will soon be launched, which will be a faster and better version of the earlier tablets. He even mentioned that the production base of Aakash tablets needs to be diversified and the tablets should be made completely indigenous.
The Government has already announced that there is a need of 220 million Aakash tablets and for that it will be issuing fresh tenders soon.
