Linux tablets seem to be the flavour of this season. First, it was the upcoming Spark tablet running Mer Linux and KDE and now comes the Trimble Yuma, a rugged (water and dust resistant) military-grade tablet from SDG Systems that now runs Ubuntu Linux.
With Linux OS on Trible Yuma, the tablet enables the mobile use of geospatial applications, like GRASS or Quantum GIS, and other standard or custom Linux-based apps to the users. Additionally, the industry-standard DB-9 serial and USB host ports provide a convenient way to interface to field or factory equipment.

"Our customers have told us that they need a rugged, military-grade, tablet computer running Linux. We are pleased to provide that option for them,” said Todd Blumer, president of SDG Systems. "The water and dust-proof rating, MIL-STD-810F testing and solid-state drive ensures that users will receive a durable Linux product that can be used in harsh conditions. With optional accessories like a vehicle docking station, the Yuma is ready to meet the field data collection or inspection needs."
The Trimble Yuma Linux tablet comes with some special features. The rugged, military-grade device packs Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook Edition OS, 17.78-cm (7-inch) sunlight-readable touchscreen display and 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, says the official press release posted on TabletCrunch.com.
Designed in magnesium alloy shell, the water and dust resistant Yuma tablet offers dual cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, additional expansion via SDIO, solid state hard drive, 32GB or 80GB of storage and Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 67. Above all, the new Trimble Yuma tablet meets the United States Military's MIL-STD-810F testing.
The Trimble Yuma Linux tablet is currently priced at $3,695.
