Wednesday, February 08, 2012:
The BlackBerry maker may have a history of making products based on a closed system but the company is now making a clear shift towards open source. In a recent development, Canadian firm Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that the native software development kit (SDK) for BlackBerry 10 will be open source.
The SDK will include open source libraries, physics engines, scripting languages, multimedia libraries, general purpose libraries, gaming frameworks and code samples, according to a report.

Alec Saunders, vice president of developer relations at RIM, told The Inquirer, "One of the biggest complaints I heard when I joined the company was from developers who said you know I can't use open source on BlackBerry OS and that means it takes longer to write code for BlackBerry and makes it more expensive."
"You know what, we're super committed to open source," he quipped.
Chris Smith, vice president of application platform and tools at RIM, further added, "So BlackBerry 10 here is committed, as ever, to open standards and meeting developers on their turf, on their terms, and driving content into our ecosystem. In fact, our entire Web platform, so the Webworks framework which takes HTML5 outside the browser in a secure environment and our Ripple Web IDE is all being done as open source development out there in the open so we are really committed to driving this open community commitment."
At the first BlackBerry DevCon Europe event on Tuesday, Thorsten Heins, the newly anointed chief executive of Research in Motion (RIM), announced that the company's new operating system BlackBerry 10 will be released later in 2012. Heins, however, didn't share a specific launch date for the new operating system.
