Tuesday, February 07, 2012:
Here comes a good news for the college and university students in India. The union government has decided to provide world’s cheapest tablet device, Aakash tablet, to the students for free.
Speaking on the sidelines of a summit organsied by Indian Semiconductor Association (ISA) in Bengaluru, Kapil Sibal, HRD and communications and IT minister said, “In order to deliver an e-learning experience to one and all, the Government is planning to distribute Aakash tablets to university and college students for free.”
Sibal said that the tablet that costs Rs 1,500 would get a subsidy of Rs 750 from the Government. The remaining amount of Rs 750 will be borne by respective educational institutions. This is how students will receive the device for free.

The minister asserted that the Government intends to create an ecosystem for the ‘complete’ production of the tablet within the country. For other buyers, the tablet will cost Rs 2,500 as decided earlier. Sibal said, “We need to improve the manufacturing segment in the country and the Government is taking initiatives in this direction.”
Aakash earned accolades for the Indian Government and Datawind (the tablet maker) from all quarters but its poor performance earned it an equivalent criticism too. The device failed the compliance test by IIT-Rajasthan. But the demand of the device is unaffected so far.
Aakash production base to be diversified
Sibal has also emphasised that the production base of the low-cost Aakash tablet PC will be diversified and it will be made completely indigenous. Sibal said, "We now look to diversify production base of Aakash and indigenise the device. We want to create an eco-system for end-to-end development of the tablet device in India. It will also create enormous opportunities for R&D institutions, developers and electronic production houses."
The Government has already said that 220 million units of the tablet device will be required and fresh tenders will be issued in this regard.
