Tuesday, February 07, 2012:
Facebook was born just eight years ago and the social network has already set a benchmark for the entire Internet world. The website has come a long way since it was created by its chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg in a dorm room. Facebook has redefined success as it has been able to capture around 845 million active subscribers across the globe and the platform continues to grow even bigger.
Here are a few little-known facts about the brain behind the era called 'Facebook'.
1. Zuckerberg is a Harvard dropout and has successfully connected almost 10 per cent of the world's population through his social network. His net worth is $17.5 billion and he has become America's 14th-richest man.
2. While in Harvard, Zuckerberg developed ‘Facemash’. Facemash was a website that asked users to judge the attractiveness of students based on their dorm-directory photos. The website did not work as authorities and many students did not like it. Zuckerberg then launched Thefacebook.com on 4 February 2004. This social network allowed the users to create basic profiles including personal information and photos. The website was initially launched for university grads but was thrown for public in 2006.

3. Facebook involves a controversy too. It has three more co-founders, all college roommates and fellow students at Harvard University--Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Harvard students Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narenya sent a cease-and-desist letter to Zuckerberg where they accused him of developing thefacebook.com independently, where as the fact according to them was that he was hired to work on their social networking project, HarvardConnection.
4. Zuckerberg is red-green colour blind. The best colour Zuckerberg can see is blue. Zuckerberg once reportedly said, “Blue is the richest colour for me. I can see all of blue.” This is the reason why blue is the dominant colour on Facebook.
5. While he was in high school, Facebook chief executive co-developed a music app called Synapse Media Player. Technology majors like Microsoft and AOL reportedly offered him a million dollars to develop the app further. The two companies also wanted to hire him but Zuckerberg preferred to go to Harvard University.
6. As per his Facebook profile, Zuckerberg’s interests include eliminating desire, minimalism, making things, breaking things, information flow, revolutions and openness. He is a fan of Daft Punk and Lady Gaga. His favourite book is ‘Ender's Game’ and he can read and write four non-English languages including French, Hebrew, Latin and ancient Greek.
7. Zuckerberg, born to Jewish parents, considers himself an atheist. According to an online report, he doesn’t own a TV. He drives a black Acura TSX.
8. Zuckerberg was declared as the worst dressed men in Silicon Valley list by GQ. You can usually spot him in ill-fitting hoodies, jeans, t-shirts and Adidas sandals. GQ described his attire as, “Oblivious to the fact that jeans and ties come in skinny sizes -- or that suits exist -- the father of Facebook (and we do mean father) loves to recycle the fresh-from-Stats-class look.” He prefers wearing his trademark jeans and a t-shirt with a tie for special occasions including press events.
9. Zuckerberg is reportedly dating Priscilla Chan since his days at Harvard University. Reports claim that they met at a party while waiting for washroom. Zuckerberg moved with Chan into his rented Palo Alto house in September 2010. A Facebook bug revealed some of his private pics with Chan recently. Out of the few pics visible online, we can see some of them with Chan, even the one at Whit and and one with President Obama at the White House.
10. Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in the world. According to a Forbes report, he became the youngest billionaire at the age of 23 in the year 2008. He was ranked 785 on the World's Billionaires list.
