Monday, February 06, 2012:
Beware of a CNN breaking news story about World War 3 posted on many Facebook accounts. It has recently come to notice that a large number of status messages on Facebook featured a CNN article about the beginning of World War 3. A typical status message reads like this: "U.S. Attacks Iran and Saudia Arabia. [expletive] :-( [LINK] The Begin of World War 3?"
Once users click on the phoney link, they are directed to a CNN replica webpage that offers an embedded video link of the attacks. If you happen to play the video out of curiosity, you will be requested to install Adobe Flash Player 11.5 in order to view the content. Now once you install the advance Flash Player, your device will be infected by a piece of malware dubbed as Troj/Rootkit-KK which drops a Troj/Rootkit-JV rootkit onto your Windows computer, reports Sophos. In addition, Sophos detects the behaviour of the malware as HPsus/FakeAV-J.

|
Reportedly, just within the first three hours of this malware release, nearly 60,000 Facebook users were duped into visiting the malicious link. Surprisingly, it's still not clear how the spam message is being shared or getting activiated on so many Facebook profiles.
So, next time if you happen to find an interseting story shared on someone else's profile, double check for the authenticity of the URL before you click on that link. Never update software from unknown resources. Also, keep your PC updated with latest anti-virus to ward off these innocuous looking online threats.
