Saturday, February 04, 2012:
The second alpha version of 12.04 of Ubuntu, codenamed - Precise Pangolin - has been published by the Ubuntu release team. The development milestone release, which is aimed at developers and testers, uses the 3.2.0-12.21 Ubuntu kernel based on the recent 3.2.2 Linux kernel. The Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Alpha 2 includes version 5.0 of Canonical's custom Unity desktop interface, which is now said to perform better and be more stable, states a report from H.
In this Ubuntu 12.04 version, the bundled open source LibreOffice office suite has been updated to version 3.5 Beta 2 and the also the 1.4 release of the Upstart event-based init replacement has been included. Kubuntu, the KDE variant of Ubuntu, now includes version 4.8 of the desktop environment, while the Server edition updates the OpenStack cloud platform to the Essex 3 milestone of the OpenStack project's forthcoming release.

The new version of Ubuntu will be a Long Term Support (LTS) release that will be supported for five years on both the server edition and also the desktop edition, for the first time. This is also the first version of Ubuntu that will target a 750 MB ISO image. This implies that it will not fit onto a standard CD. Instead, users will need to burn the images to DVD or copy them to a USB drive for installation.
Since it is an alpha release, developers state that the pre-releases should not be used by people who are looking for a stable system and who are not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. Also, the people who are testing the release have been encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs found by them. The second alpha version will be followed by two beta versions in March. The final version is scheduled to arrive on 26 April 2012.
The Ubuntu 12.04 can be downloaded for 32- and 64-bit systems from the project's site.
