It's time to say goodbye to darker and blurrier images. If you are frustrated with the quality of your smartphone's flash light, here is something exciting for you. STMicroelectronics is all set to bring a new chip STCF04, which will offer the next generation of LED flash for the smartphone cameras. The chip has an integrated camera flash and a torch which gives a brightness of over 40 Watts.
Some camera flashes come with a Xenon strobe. This technology needs a high voltage even for a brief flash but the current generation smartphones use LED flashes, which consume up to 2W power. This new chip from STMicroelectronics is all set to change the night time/indoor imaging, as it renders the flash quality of professional cameras with lower voltage consumption. The chip is capable of storing charge from the battery of the smartphone in its capacitor. It then illuminates the LEDs with this 'reserved' charge when required.

This chip is able to control the level of flash depending on the surrounding, using light sensors, said a Crazy Engineers' report. The chip also offers a brightness control for the torch light, which can be taken up to 12 levels. Some other features of the chip include in-built temperature sensors, safety timers and protection against short-circuit.
The chip has been made available to the device manufacturers and its commercial production is slated to begin by March. The 3 millimetre square chip is likely to cost around $2.
