Saturday, February 04, 2012:
Some government officials, including the family members of the U.S. government, are expected to receive special smartphones this year that can send and receive confidential documents. According to a CNN report, the smartphones will run a modified version of Google's Android operating system.
According to the people involved with the project, “The phones are being developed as part of an initiative involving multiple federal agencies and government contractors.”
Instead of building special handsets, the government is planning to install the modified software on commercially available phones. This will also help the government to keep the costs down. The main motive behind creating such kind of devices is to allow federal workers to securely send and receive confidential government on the go.

Due to risk of a security breach, government workers are currently not allowed to send class\ documents using smartphones. Part of the worry stems from the risk of malicious applications, which have made way into the official Android Market in the past, and could be used to siphon sensitive information off a device.
The project is being funded by the Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and the National Security Agency is charged with evaluating and signing-off on the software. The authorised smartphones for sending classified data are expected within the next few months.
Angelos Stavrou, an information-security director at George Mason University--who is working on the project as a contractor, said, “Android was more cooperative in supporting some of the capabilities that we wanted to support in the operating system, whereas Apple was more averse.”
