Friday, February 03, 2012:
Summers are not going to be very pleasant this year! The AC prices are set to rise by 10 to 20 per cent this summer. Industrial sources revealed that this hike in prices is due to the combination of factors such as dollar-rupee volatility and the pressure on input cost. Spit AC prices are said to rise even more due to the upgradation cost involved.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has enhanced the energy standards of split AC to a higher level in line with the Energy Conservation' programme'. Star-rated split ACs have a higher energy efficiency ratio in comparison to last year's same star units. As a result, 5-star rank will come down to 4-star. All this will require an additional investment in R&D and increased input cost which would ultimately result into the hike in retail prices, explains an Energy Conservation programme.
According to industry sources, LG and Blue Star has launched their 2012 models with increased prices. The 15 per cent additional cost may go up further in the summers. For example, the new range of air-conditioners that are launched by different companies in the market are tagged for at Rs 19,500 for a 1-tonne unit, as against Rs 17,500 last year.
