In what can be termed as a milestone step in offering open and free education, a Stanford professor has decided to leave the confines of academia and offer free online technology courses through his start-up.
Sebastian Thrun, an IT professor at Stanford, has said that he is leaving his position at the Stanford and will concentrate on Udacity, his start-up where he would be offering free online classes. David Evans, a professor of computer science at the University of Virginia has also joined Thrun to launch Udacity.
Some of the courses included in the first set of online course will cover 'Building a Search Engine' and 'Programming a Robotic Car'. In the first course, the professor promises to teach you about computer science which can help you build a Web search engine like Google or Yahoo!.

While in the robotic car course, you will get an opportunity to learn the programming of all the major systems of a robotic car. The seven weeks' course will be undertaken by the leader of Google and Stanford’s autonomous driving teams.
Thrun has had an exciting experience in the online classroom environment. The course he conducted with Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, drew more than 160,000 participants from around the world. He said that he intends to launch a new higher education site which will bring online classes, for free, to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide.
The classes will be starting from 20 February 2012. Students successfully completing the courses will also get certificates from the professors.
