"The data centre is a very cold, dark place... It is also a digital fortress with several layers of security," Pramod Verma, chief technology architect at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), shares while describing what has become home to the world’s largest biometric identification system.
According to an Indian Express report, the centre is located in a nondescript building in the eastern part of Bengaluru. This building (with no sign) forbids any visitors. "The data centre’s physical dimensions are not impressive: a 2,000 sq ft room housing an array of about 700 computers, a testament to the rapid miniaturisation of technology. But within those computers is a humongous biometric database — the digital fingerprint scans, iris scans, photographs and personal details of over 180 million Indians and counting," the report further adds.

For those of you who need an introduction to the Aadhaar project, here are the details: Aadhaar or UID is a 12-digit individual identification number issued by UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India. This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in the country. Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. By providing a clear proof of identity, Aadhaar is aimed at empowering the underprivileged residents of the country in accessing services such as the formal banking system. It is also targeted at giving them the opportunity to avail various other services provided by the Government and the private sector. UIDAI is collecting fingerprints and iris scans of all residents, along with other information, for Aadhaar.
Headed by co-chairman of Infosys Nandan Nilekani, UIDAI has already issued more than 180 million Aadhaar numbers to Indian citizens. It has the mandate to enroll 200 million people for the project till March 2012. The Authority has so far spent Rs 6.73 billion between January 2009 and Nov 2011.
