Wednesday, February 01, 2012 India is currently witnessing a technology revolution of sorts. A host of low cost tablet devices launched in the country in the recent past bear testimony to the fact that India is ready to take technology in a big way. Yet another fact that emerged with these launches is that Android is getting huge in India.

Almost all the tablet devices launched in India in the recent past run on Android operating system. This is a huge achievement for Android as a platform, but a major issue that most encounter is handling of the platform. Here are a few tips and tricks that can help you run your Android tablet better. These tips are applicable for most of the tablet devices running on Honeycomb and many of them work on Ice Cream Sandwich too.

Turn off your WiFi

Battery drainage is a major issue with Android devices. Android tablets keep working even when they are not being used, which otherwise is a good thing but not-so-good for the battery of your device. A good way of avoiding battery drainage is to turn off the WiFi when the tablet is not being used. You just need to go to the main Settings menu and select the Wireless & Networks > Wireless Settings > WiFi Sleep Policy and choose the option to sleep ‘when the screen turns off’. It will do the needful and also, the WiFi will be activated as soon as the tablet is wakened.

Activate hidden browser settings

Android browser is feature rich and comes along with settings that allow the users tailor their experience as per their preferences. One can do that in a number of ways. This includes activation of hidden browser settings like in some desktop browsers. Go to address bar of the browser and type ‘about:debug’. Hit return after that and you will find a new Debug menu activated in the main browser settings. This allows the users to change preferences in the way the browser operates.

Browser Debug Menu

After activating the hidden debug menu, you can access a number of settings that can be altered. According to a ZDNet report, it includes a couple of changes to the way pages render that can affect load times. You can always experiment with the settings to understand the changes.

Make the browser feel like a desktop browser

Since the Android browser identifies itself to the websites as an Android browser, it happens that many a times you get the mobile version of a website instead of the Web version. You can change this on some Android tablets, if UA setting is available. You just need to change it to Desktop and you will stop getting mobile versions of the Web pages. If your tablet is sans UA settings, you can activate this setting through the hidden debug menu. After activating it, go to the UA selection menu, which changes the setting to desktop or one of the other settings as desired. The settings remain the same until changed manually.

Speed up the browser

If you encounter a lag while entering text in dialog boxes in the browser, you can overcome the issue by changing the setting. After activating the hidden debug menu, you just need to deselect the Enable OpenGL Rendering option. The trick works on some websites, while it may not be able to speed up the browsing of a few websites.

Check out the lab for advanced controls

Honeycomb, the Android browser offers a Labs area which provides advanced functionality. You can activate quick controls. Once activated in the Labs, the entire screen is dedicated to displaying Web pages.

Easy app uninstall

You can easily uninstall the apps that you do not need by the Manage Applications section in the settings of your Android tablet. It's easier to uninstall apps in Honeycomb. Once you see the main Applications screen, tap and hold the app you wish to get rid of. You just need to drag the app to the trash can and it is gone. It is worth mentioning here that simply dragging the app icons from the home screen to the trash does not mean that they are deleted. You can do that only from the application launcher screen.
