Tuesday, January 31, 2012:
The consumer-focused researchers at NPD, have recently expressed that the tablet sales will increase globally, more than fivefold over the next five years. According to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Tablet Quarterly report, sales of tablets will increase from 72.7 million in 2011 to 383.3 million in 2017.
Last week Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive officer said that 2011 was supposed to be the year of tablet and he thinks that most people would agree with him that last year was the year of iPad. However, NPD doesn't see Apple being the only reason for the growth in tablets sale market. The researchers anticipate growth coming from the introduction of tablets from new brands, like Aakash in India, and established brands, such as Dell in China.

A site called, The Reg, agrees to the fact of NPD that growth will be strong in Brazil, Russia, India and China once the prices drop. Jim McGregor, NPD's strategist said that growth in the emerging markets will be accompanied by competition at lower price points. This will result in significant opportunities for processors that can optimise power and performance, while achieving device price points that are often under $100.
NPD has also cited examples of low cost-tablets being distributed in Turkey through government-sponsored educational efforts called, Turkey's 'FATIH Project.' Their aim is to distribute free Turkish-made tablets to 15 million students by 2015. Also, the new Aakash Tablet which costs $35 will cost around $50 once documentation, packaging, shipping are added. This figure is way less than $499-to-$829 premium for the 'magical and revolutionary' iPad.
