Vivek Khetan of Gizmos Nepal, the sole distributors of Aakash in Nepal, said, “We had a purchase order of around 10,000 units. But bookings at the exhibition and online have been over double that figure.”
Even though there is a wait period of two months for the delivery of the tablet, potential customers seem to be in no hurry. The tablets costs NRs 6,000 in Nepal and is priced at half the rate of its nearest competitor.
The tablet that is being promoted by the Indian Government is aimed specifically at students. But in Nepal, the orders for the DataWind tablet have come from all sections.
Khetan said that they have got an order for 1,000 units from a restaurant chain. "And besides students, professionals and businessmen, many inquiries have come from rural areas and other regions for dealerships,” he said.
The last day of the exhibition is 31 January and first preference for the device would be given to bookings made at the stall in the exhibition, states an HT report. The online bookings would continue even after the exhibition.
Aakash was launched in October last year and the online bookings of the device started in December, which saw 1.4 million orders in just two weeks. The students can avail the tablet from their college at just Rs 1,500. The cost of Ubislate 7+ is Rs 2,999.
The updated version of the device will cost Rs 750 more in Nepal and is powered by a better processor. It will also have a bigger battery, a new version of Android operating system, Wi-Fi and GPRS support, HD video and access to over 1,50,000 applications.
