The International Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas showcased a slew of gadgets but here's a unique concept that came to limelight during the event. It's an ATM machine with a difference. The ecoATM is an e-cycling station, which pays cash for recycling used or old mobile phones and MP3 players, with tablets coming soon.
The ecoATM is an award-winning San Diego start-up known as eco-friendly innovative kiosks. The ecoATM machine automates the buy-back of used portable gadgets and mobile phones directly from consumers. The device uses patented machine vision, electronic diagnostics, and artificial intelligence to evaluate and buy back used cell phones and MP3 players directly from consumers for cash or store credit.

All you need to do is to drop your old phone into the machine and it will evaluate the worth of your device and pay you back accordingly. The big machine comes with a large touchscreen and a big metal 'mouth' where you can place your old phone or MP3 player.
The device takes the snap of the gadget fed to it and analyses its shape and size. Through one of the machine's many cables, you can connect your mobile or MP3 player. The machine will then check out the inner hardware and other internal parts to see how much your device is functional at that time.
Based on its analysis, the ecoATM offers its quote for your device, which is based on what a network of hundreds of electronics-recycling companies are willing to pay for it. Once you agree to the quote, the machine dispenses the offered price to you. TOI reports that in a demonstration by ecoATM founder Bill Bowles, it showed the worth of a Verizon iPhone 4 as $221. Even if a device is completely out of order, the machine will still accept it and offer you a dollar.
Tom Tullie, Chairman and CEO, ecoATM said, "Almost everyone has a collection of used portable electronics stored somewhere. At ecoATM, we believe strongly in repurposing good electronics that can be refurbished and used by consumers in other markets. We find a second life for about 75 per cent of the used devices we collect at the kiosks. For the other 25 per cent of devices that are truly at their end of life, we work with either R2-certified or BAN-certified recyclers who reclaim the raw materials and precious metals in an environmentally responsible way."
In short, the ecoATM provides a convenient trade-in solution that electronically and/or visually inspect virtually any consumer electronic device. The machine connects consumers real-time to broad worldwide secondary markets, ensuring best pricing and pays consumers immediately in cash and/or store credit.
