Monday, January 09, 2012:
Broadening the horizons of its open-source operating system beyond the PC domain, Canonical has now unveiled Ubuntu TV. The company disclosed its plans to bring the Linux distro for tablets, smartphones and TVs only last year. Ubuntu on smartphones and tablets was something that the world was looking forward to (as these are the hottest domain) but Canonical surprised by bringing Ubuntu on televisions first.
The company has unveiled the first Ubuntu TV at CES in Las Vegas. The company expects the television to hit the shelves by the end of this year. According to a PC Pro report, Jane Silber, CEO, Canonical said, “It's a simple viewing experience for online video, both your own and routed over the Internet.”

Silber revealed that the company is in talks with television manufacturers, but refrained from confirming any signed deals. It is worth mentioning here that the TV space will become the next competition ground as players like Google and Apple are also eyeing it for this year. But Canonical’s head is confident that Ubuntu TV will be able to deliver ‘something different’ as compared to its rivals.
Silber told PC Pro, "OEMs and ODMs are increasingly wary of the walled garden [approach] that certainly Apple takes - and increasingly Google, although it's much more open than Apple. We see a lot of demand for a neutral player."
Canonical may face issues with marketing muscle of Google and Apple, but the company has its plans in place for this too. The company will woo manufacturers by supplying the software for free. Canonical will primarily target US and China’s market with Ubuntu TV. Expansion to either countries will depend upon whether Canonical can strike local content deals.
